An analysis of Chinese learners' use of "nanka"

For Chinese learners, it is difficult to acquire the ambiguous expression which is frequently used byJapanese. In order to verify how the Chinese learners comprehend and use these expressions, thepaper takes example of “nanka” and conducts an investigation on database and questionnaire. Theresult suggests that Chinese learners use the expression “nanka” quiet differently from native Japanese. An detailed analysis of every usage of “nanka” reveals the discovery: There’s a Chineseequivalent,“什麼”, of “nanka” when it is used as pronouns. Therefore, Chinese learners have no difficulty in using “nanka” as pronouns. However, when “nanka” is used as adverbial particles andintroductory remarks, there’s no such equivalent in Chinese. As a result, Chinese learners can’t understand it properly and they use these “nanka”expressions as pet phrases or fillers.
