This paper analyses reading, writing and spelling skills. It is found that these need to be used appropriately in order to make meaning. Successful readers are able to relate their own backgroundknowledge efficiently, and these strategies should be taught explicitly to language learners. As for writing and spelling competence, by giving value to the term meaningful context, writing appropriately for the target community needs to be taught, so that the students’ writings, regardless of their level of proficiency, will have authentic value.
