An Examination of Tatsuji M iyoshi’s War Poems

Tatsuji Miyoshi wrote more than 90 war poems. In this paper, the author will examine the characteristics ofMiyoshi’s war poems and, by doing that, clarify his attitude towards World War II. the author will focus on thefollowing three poems as examples:“Celebration Day of the First Victories”(“Daiichi senshoshukujitsu”)from Newsof Victory Has Come (Shoho itaru, July 1942);“Children of Japan”(“Nippon no kodomo”) from Kantaku(Wooden Clappers in the Cold, December 1943);and “Korea with the Fragrance of Lilac”(“Lira no hana niouchosen”) from Kanka eigen (Martial Music,June 1945).
