Are there any differences between Japanese learners in Europe and native Japanese speakers when reading on-line kuchikomi reviews? We investigated 40 advanced learners in the UK, Germany, France, and Spain, and 20 Japanese native speakers using the 'think-aloud' method. The results show some differences in interpretation. The European learners regard the use of symbols and emoticons as either 'not reliable' or 'cute'. Japanese native speakers treat these as meaningful information. Furthermore Japanese natives accept detailed information on service and individual experience as an indication of the restaurant's reputation, but European learners do not see this as useful information, arguing that individual experience cannot be generalized.
