This paper describes an intensive blended learning program, ABLE+ (Action-Based Language Empowerment),being developed in the Department of Applied Computer Sciences at Shonan Institute of Technology (SIT) in Fujisawa, Japan, with the goal of training absolute beginners in a target language so that they can function at survival level as quickly as possible. The program incorporates an initial week of online training followed by two weeks of classroom instruction. Participants are then flown overseas and tested in situ to ascertain the effectiveness of their training. Overall course structure, pedagogical approach and principles, criteria for participant selection, and advantages of online and in-class training will be discussed, followed by general observations regarding the research objectives of how learners perceive their success in using the L2 to communicate onsite to complete specific functional goals, as well as identification of changes in their self-efficacy, or perception of themselves as language learners.
