Much effort has been made by Japanese experts to assessthe dose to residents of FukushimaPrefecture intheaftermathof the2011nucleardisasteI1.Residentsliving nearthe Fukushima Daiichi NuclearPower Plant(FDNPP)were ordered to evacuate promptly after the accident tominimize radiation exposure. Manypapers performing individualdose measurement and estimation of these residents have already been published.This paper provides a brief overview of these publications by dividingthe evaluation into the early-phase(<1year)andthelate-phase(i=lyear)studies,and compilingthelessonslearntfrom the2011nucleardisaster.0ne commonview of the studies by the Japanese experts is thatthelevels of exposureare generally1ow.Asidefromthe internalthyroid dosefrom short-1ivedradionuclides(mainly131I)atthe early phase,both theextemaland internaldoses attributable tothe nucleardisaster are comparable orlessthanthose from naturalradiations.A number of individualdose measurementsatthelate phase have provided usefulinformation for understanding exposure situations in everydaylife forpeopleliving in theaffectedarea One key remainingissue forthe dose assessment is to evah1ate the related uncertaint1ll,in particularforthe internalthyroid dose received atthe early phase.Thus,thereis a role forfurther studies to improvethe certaintyof dose estimations.
