||Effects of Shock Wave Propagation to the Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) Signals

Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is effective surface probing technique, and has been applied to the inspection of fuel debris inside nuclear core at the TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant by developing a fiber-coupled LIBS system .From the LIBS signals, information concerning elements and quantities of the species at the laser irradiated region is measurable. The signal emission process is also influenced by the laser-induced shock wave propagation, and the process modifies LIBS signal. Since the propagation behavior can be influenced by the surface characteristics of the species, additional related information also useful for the inspection might be deduced by the spectroscopic measurements. In this study, in order to relate LIBS signal to the shock wave propagation behavior, ionic to atomic line ratio of LIBS signal for Zr metal and Zr oxide were measured, and the shadowgraph of laser-induced shock wave was observed.
