Presentation Modifying effects of sulfur-containing compounds in mice exposed to heavy-ion radiation.

Radiation induces many molecular alterations in organisms. Particularly, aiming to living in space, we are exposed to many kinds of particle radiation. Radiation protectors which are easily taken and have no side effects are expected in cases of exposure to radiation environmentally. Some of food factors have been studied for the purpose. One of them, garlic oil has characters to reduce radiation effects. However, functions of components of garlic oil have not been fully investigated, particularly in the case of the oral administration. We have already demonstrated that X-ray irradiation induced micronuclei in HepG2 cells and that one of garlic oil components, diallyl disulfide (DADS) ameliorated the induction. Here, to investigate biochemical changes and DADS-induced effects on radiation damages by Fe-ion irradiation, mice irradiated at 0.1, 0.5 and 2 Gy and administrated with DADS were analyzed in terms of dose-dependent- or dose-specific -alterations in amino acids, cytokines, anti-oxidative regulation or sulfur metabolizing proteins such as 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase (MPST) or thiosulfate sulfurtransferase (TST) in the livers.
