For widespread use of rotating gantries for carbonradiotherapy, we designed a new compact gantry. This newgantry consists of three combined-function superconductingmagnetshaving a bending angle of 90 degrees. The dipole field ofthe superconducting magnets is set to be Bmax=5.02 Tesla,corresponding to a bending radius of 1.32 m for transportingcarbon ions having kinetic energy of 430 MeV/u. Thesuperconducting magnet also has three independent superconductingquadrupole-coils, which are to be winded inside of thedipole coil for beam focusing. The dipole and quadrupole coilsare electrically isolated in the magnet, and connected toindependent power supplies, so that each field component can beindependently excited. Having used the combined-functionsuperconducting magnets, the size of the rotating gantry wouldbecome very compact; the length and radius are 5.1 m and 4.0 m,respectively. The magnetic field distributions of the superconductingmagnets were calculated with a three-dimensionalelectromagnetic field solver, Opera-3d code. With calculatedfields, the superconducting coils were designed, so as to obtainuniform field distributions. In this paper, the design of thiscompact rotating gantry as well as the superconducting magnetsis presented.
