Presentation Effect of Time-of-Flight Information to Fill Lost-Frequency in Incomplete PET Geometry

The time-of-flight (TOF) information can improve image quality in positron emission tomography (PET). In addition, it is known that the TOF information can significantly reduce the occurrence of image artifacts in incomplete geometries such as partial ring PET. In this study, we apply TOF information to the dual-ring OpenPET geometry, in which low frequency components are missing. We analyzed the TOF projection data in the incomplete PET geometry. Compared with the non-TOF projection data, the TOF projection data have wide range of frequency component along the projection direction. The theoretical analysis showed that the TOF projection data can fill lost-frequency components in the gap region of the dual-ring OpenPET. Also, numerical simulation showed that the reconstructed images with the TOF information had lost-frequency components which were lost in the non TOF reconstruction images. Therefore, we concluded that the TOF information is theoretically and practically effective for filling lost-frequency regions in incomplete geometries.
