The purpose of this research is to clarify the degree of water quality purification possibilities by carbon fiber, targeting wastewater from the cafeteria canteen. In the experiment, it was shown that the reduction effect of COD using industrial carbon fiber subjected to hydrophilic treatment is almost same as the case of using specifically designed carbon fiber for water purification. The water quality purification effect by carbon fiber is a decomposition action by microorganism growing in fiber, and it is improved by adding water flow and aeration. However, if the number of carbon fiber bundles is too large, the fibers become entangled with each other, the water flow does not circulate, and the purification effect decreases.Regardless of the initial COD concentration of the canteen wastewater, the experimental results showed that the COD concentration decreased to about 70% by the 5th day, and about 80% by the 7th day. Also, in the repeated carbon fiber experiments, there was no decline in purification effect even after 10 times of reuse. Once growth of microorganisms begins, it is expected to continue to have a purification effect over a long time. From a series of experiments, it became clear that COD level of canteen wastewater can be effectively reduced by a simple method of industrial carbon fiber.
