In this study, balls of polycarbonate (PC), which is the material used for typical brackets, were surface-treated with various DLC coatings by plasma-based ion implantation (PBII) to investigate the resulting reduction in friction. The friction properties between the surface-treated PC balls and various alloy plates, which simulate the brackets and wires, respectively, were investigated in artificial saliva. PBII, DLC, and F-DLC treatments were carried out on polycarbonate balls, and the friction properties between the balls and Ni-Ti or Ti-6Al-4V were investigated with and without the saliva. In both cases, the friction coefficients for the DLC coated PC ball were reduced in comparison with non-coated ball. Based on the results, DLC coating is considered to be suitable for use in orthodontic treatment.
