The purpose of this paper is to shed light on `The illustrated Hand-Book S. Iida. Takashimaya's Silk and Embroideries Kyoto & Tokyo,' a catalogue written in Meiji Period and discuss it from two aspects; linguistics or English point of view, and retailing point of view. In the following section, we will review the history of Takashimaya and describes how this catalogue was issued. In section 3, we will show the detail of the catalogue and consider when it would be written, how different expressions in English are different from those in present-day English including some mistakes from present grammatical point of view, and what the significance of the catalogue was at that time.
