We conducted a literature review to examine the significance of systematically incorporating caring as the essence of nursing practice into lessons, exercises, and clinical practice in basic nursing education. The results were classified into four categories: 1) ‘Concerning the concept of caring’, 2) ‘Considering caring from the viewpoint of a curriculum’, 3) ‘Concerning specific methodologies of caring’, and 4) ‘Concerning analysis of caring behaviours and awareness’. The reason for the literature review is that it is insufficient to merely clarify the concept of care in order to introduce caring strategies into basic nursing education. The results suggest that ‘caring’ is an indispensable concept for students to internalize in order to become professionals. Moreover, students’ understanding may be deepened by conducting lessons and exercises focusing on many case studies that emphasize ‘dialogue as a concrete method of teaching caring. It was concluded that it is meaningful to incorporate ‘caring’ as a program in basic nursing education.
