Work of the Travel Agency from a Viewpoint of the Ethnic Business:From Host-Guest Relations to Networks

This paper focuses on the business practices of a Japanese travel agency in China as a type of ethnic business and examines the value of their service and the kinds of relationships built to produce such value. I illustrate the role of a travel agency as not simply a culture broker that matches the guest’s demand with host’s supply but as an agent that creates networks to connect consumers with their destinations. The networks include various actors across countries, such as hotels, restaurants and airplanes. This perspective highlights the current dynamism in tourism, compare to the host-guest approach.
