Many universities provide study support resources in order to help students, offering an optimal learning environment and nurturing learner autonomy. However, many students with low English proficiency tend not to actively seek support. The present paper reports on an attempt to encourage students in need of higher English proficiency to utilize a study support room (SSR). First-year students were given a grammar test to assess their understanding of basic grammar items, and, based on this score, advised to seek instruction at the SSR. The effect of this intervention on the usage rate of the SSR, the feasibility of adopting a grammar test as a tool to encourage learner autonomy, and other issues associated with students of low English proficiency are discussed.
