This paper considers some constraints on the interpretation of indeterminate pronouns such as “dare” and “nani” in Japanese. The general understanding is that the interpretation of these pronouns is determined by the element that is associated with them. For instance, “dare” is interpreted as a wh-element if it is associated with the question particle “ka” as in “dare-ga kimasita-ka?” It will not be interpreted as a wh-element if it is associated with a concessive element “temo” as in “dare-ga ki-temo ii-desu-yo.” In the past, there have been two opposing observations presented on the interpretation of the indeterminate pronoun in embedded clauses. This paper will clarify some fundamental issues and present an analysis based on the notion of minimality.
