Moisturizing Effect of The Cosmetics Containing Organogermanium on Skin

Organogermanium, which has been utilized as a natural medicine from acient times, was found out recently to promote the formation, maturation of cornified envelope as well as the synthesis of ceramide which is one of the main constituents to compose the stratum corneum (SC) lipid layers of the skin, leading to our expectation that organogermanium may exhibit effectiveness on the skin conditions. Our latest investigation by measuring water content of SC and transepidermal water loss (TEWL) revealed that the application of organogermanium tends to improve the hydration state of the SC.Instead of the cream formulation that had been used in our previous clinical test, in the present study we investigated the effect of organogermanium contained in the lotion on the skin conditions by measuring the water content of SC, TEWL, as well as skin viscoelasticity and skin colour. Four weeks continuous application of the lotion containing organogermanium significantly increased water content of SC in comparison with that without organogermanium, while the other measured skin properties almost remained unchanged. In addition, neither the lotion with nor that without organogermanium affected the amount of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid (PCA) in the SC that can relate to the hydration state of the stratum corneum. These obtained findings suggest that the increase in water content of SC by the repeated applications of the organogermanium lotion is not related to the changes in the PCA level in SC.
