Numerical Method for the Analysis of the Thermal Insulation of a Cold Storage Room by an Air Curtain under the Inçuence of Human Movement

A numerical method is proposed for the study of a down-feed air curtain used to keep a storage room cold. We pay special attention to the inçuence of human movement on the performance of air curtains. The coupled problem of çuid çow and heat transfer is governed by the equation of continuity, the Navier-Stokes equations with the buoyancy term based on the Boussinesq's approximation and the energy equation in three dimensions. The governing equations are discretized by the ånite element method in space and by the ånite diãerence method in time. To deal with a human body moving in a çuid region and to avoid the remeshing procedure every time step, the penalization method is introduced. The region occupied by the human body is assumed to be ålled with a virtual çuid, and the no-slip conditions imposed on the surface of the human body are included in the Navier-Stokes equations and the energy equation as the penalty terms for the virtual çuid. Numerical calculations by the proposed method have yielded the qualitative tendency of the temperature distribution in a cold room and its change in time under the inçuence of human movement. Encouraging results are obtained.
