Student learning during practical training in mental health welfare

This study introduces an overview of the practical training program currently being conducted at the International University of Kagoshima, and examined students' experiences.Students completed a questionnaire containing free writing questions, which was analyzed qualitatively using the KJ method. A total of 16 students responded. Their responses were organized into 7 major categories.Students learned about the influences of the administrative environment of psychiatric hospitals and long-term hospitalization on patients. Furthermore, they learned about the aggressive efforts of staff to promote patients' strengths, and deepened their self-awareness by listening to narratives of staff and other parties.The results suggest the importance of the interaction between teacher's instruction and students' learning, and how teachers can learn from students' learning.
