The purpose of this study is to examine the experience of an alcoholism support group member using semi-structured interviews. The participant in this study was a man who was recovering from alcoholism. The verbatim interview transcripts were analyzed qualitatively according to the KJ method. The analysis of the interviews yielded 51 codes, which were in turn grouped into 23 small categories, 10 medium categories, and 7 major categories. The results indicated that support group staff were not domineering and often talked about themselves. A more equal relationship between the staff and members encouraged the staff and members to talk more freely. Staff contributed to the recovery of people addicted to alcohol by daring to let go of the established roles expected of specialists while still demonstrating their expertise.
