Career education, as well as Japanese language education, was focused on in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial era. With the end of the Second World War in 1945, Taiwan, as a former Japanese colony, was returned to China. The Taiwanese people were then governed under martial law for the next 38 years. It was within this context that the six years compulsory education system was established in 1947, and later, the number of compulsory years in education was extended to nine in 1968, which included junior high level education. In this process, Taiwan has established its own education system succeeding the Japanese system. Later, the repeal of martial law in 1987 triggered democratization and liberalization in Taiwan. Since then, “National elementary and junior high curriculum standard< had been the standard guidance for school education, changing into “The elementary school of old China nine years consistently course network pivot< in the 2000s, following the educational reform. This paper concisely shows the process of the change of the historical educational background and will discuss how career education in Taiwan has played a role in the context of school education.
