Practical instruction skills of physical education teacher candidates : Through analysis of practical classes in student teaching

The purpose of this study is to examine the practical instruction skills and exercise observation skills of student teachers in Japan and the US. In addition, to examine the effectiveness of the US physical education teacher education program from the point of view of the practical instruction skills, we analyzed practice class videos by student teacher in Japan and the US, using PETAI analysis system. The results of case study showed that there is the tendency in which Japanese student teacher improve their practical instruction skills as the course progresses, the US student teacher have already acquired relatively high practical instruction skills at the beginning of the course.
