Three competencies are emphasized in the new Course of Study issued from Japan’s MEXT(Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology). Among various fields ofschool mathematics, probability and statistics are quite effective to enable active learning,since they are deeply connected with reality. However, at the same time, it is also difficult tocorrectly understand the concept of probability, and there are many studies on misconceptionof probability from various viewpoints.We can find various causes of these misconceptions, but one of the major factors amongthem exists in the current school education curriculum. We point out problems of currentprobability education through mathematics textbooks of junior high schools and commentariesin the Course of Study for elementary school. Then in the last, we make suggestions for futureimprovement in probability education at school.
