The Development of Arithmetic Competence Scale:Its Relation to Self-esteem and Motivation

The scales of self-esteem, self-efficacy, feeling of school adjustment, and motivation\nwere administered to 274 elementar y school students. In addition, the scale of\nArithmetic competence and interest was administered. The exploratory factor analysis\nshowed five factors in the scale of Arithmetic competence and interest. With regard to\ngender difference, female students showed statistically higher scores on“ Reading” and\n“Feeling of school adjustment,” while male students showed higher scores in“ Physical\nAbility” and“ Arithmetic competence.” With regard to grade difference, except for\n“feeling of school adjustment” and“ Anxiety for Arithmetic,” there were tendencies of\ndeclining scores with age. Multiple regression analysis showed that the influences of\nintrinsic motivation on Arithmetic competence increased with age. That implied the\nimportance of intrinsic motivation in order to improve Arithmetic competence. (126\nwords)
