The Development of Arithmetic Competence Scale:Its Relation to Self-esteem and Motivation

The scales of self-esteem, self-efficacy, feeling of school adjustment, and motivationwere administered to 274 elementar y school students. In addition, the scale ofArithmetic competence and interest was administered. The exploratory factor analysisshowed five factors in the scale of Arithmetic competence and interest. With regard togender difference, female students showed statistically higher scores on“ Reading” and“Feeling of school adjustment,” while male students showed higher scores in“ PhysicalAbility” and“ Arithmetic competence.” With regard to grade difference, except for“feeling of school adjustment” and“ Anxiety for Arithmetic,” there were tendencies ofdeclining scores with age. Multiple regression analysis showed that the influences ofintrinsic motivation on Arithmetic competence increased with age. That implied theimportance of intrinsic motivation in order to improve Arithmetic competence. (126words)
