Description
The increase of space debris is becoming serious and active removal of large space debris from crowded economically useful orbits is required. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has been investigating the electrodynamic tether (EDT) system. Deploying a several kilo-meter tether is necessary in order to obtain sufficient thrust for large debris removal. Compared to deploying several hundred meters, deployment velocity increases and tether may be severed by the tension over tensile strength. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the simple spool-type reels and brake mechanisms for reducing deployment velocity with bare tether. First, by ground experiments, we modeled deployment friction of the spool-type reel deployed from the outside and of brake mechanisms for limiting exit diameter of reel case. Then, the models were applied to numeric simulations assuming a several kilo-meter deployment on orbit and we estimated the required value of the deployment friction and braking model.
