On-orbit Performance Evaluation for High-Torque Reaction Wheels Mounted in Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2(ALOS-2)

Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2 (ALOS-2) is equipped with five high-torque reaction wheels that can produce more than 0.9 Nm output torque to realize the right- and left-looking function of the synthetic aperture radar antenna (PALSAR-2) with agile attitude maneuver performance: 30 deg within 2 min or 60 deg within 3 min. This study describes the evaluation of on-orbit integrity and performance of high-torque reaction wheels. The on-orbit friction torques during Earth pointings and output torques during maneuvers are analyzed using the telemetry data to monitor the performance of the torques. The results of on-orbit data analyses show that these wheels maintain and execute desirable performances.
