Research on performance improvement of a switching section of heat switch for mechanical cryocooler.

Next generation inferred astronomy mission SPICA needs to refrigerate its large optical telescope below 6K by mechanical cryocooler system, which consists of two stage Stirling coolers (2ST) and Joule Thomson coolers (JT) to be redundant. By using heat switch for the 2ST cooler to reduce the parasitic heat load in case of single cryocooler failure, the amount of 2ST cooler could be minimized. In this research, a passive heat switch operated by thermal contraction of polymer ring was investigated with several polymer materials to obtain higher on conductance performance than requirement of 1.6 W/K. Experiment result shows that on conductance of 1.94 approximatery .60[W/K] (@20K) was achieved by Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE).
