Modeling of Condensation in CO2 Hypersonic Rarefied Flows

At Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), a hypersonic rarefied wind tunnel (HRWT) has been developed for the prediction of rarefied aerodynamics. Lately, we plan to extend the capability of HRWT to CO2 hypersonic flows so as to improve CO2 aerodynamic prediction for Mars missions. For CO2 rarefied aerodynamics, condensation effect may not be negligible, and thus, the understanding of CO2 condensing flows is essential. In this study, we first develop numerical schemes for CO2 condensing flows. Second, we investigate the impact of condensation on rarefied aerodynamics in the HRWT test section.
