Flux and Temperature Effects on Material Degradation by Ultraviolet Irradiation: Crosslinked ETFE Polymer and Polyurethane

The surface temperature of a spacecraft depends on its solar absorptance and the infrared emittance of the surface materials, and these thermal optical properties are key parameters in satellite thermal design. Ultraviolet (UV) rays cause organic materials to degrade, which means UV-irradiation ground testing is important in evaluation the “adequate lifetime assessment” and “end-of-life (EOL)” characteristics of materials used in space. While the design lifetimes of spacecraft have recently been extended, the development period has become shorter, which means that there is less available time for ground testing. In previous experiments, UV degradation was accelerate due to increase the temperature.In this study, we report on the results of a comparison between two types of UV irradiation, “changing the temperature (between below 313 K, 353 K, and 423 K) at constant UV flux” and “changing the UV flux (between 2 UV-sun, 10 UV-sun, and 30 UV-sun) at constant temperature”. Analysis of thermo-optical properties and cross-sectional observation (Ultraviolent - Fluorescence : UV-FL) as cross-linked ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (X-ETFE) and Polyurethane.
