Where is the pride? Where is the pride of the person who is called «aperson of culture» headed for? Those are urgent problems which cause adifferent problem after another. What is the responsibility? What is thecompetence of the person who is called «a person of culture»? What is themission of the person who is called «a person of culture»? Those areserious questions which are beyond question.This paper, as an approach to such problems and questions from acontemporary viewpoint, with references to the actual conditions ofwelfare in Japan, presents a reinterpretation of the concept ofBildungsphilister proposed by Nietzsche. Bildungsphilister means a personwho fancies himself as «a person of culture» even though he lacks culture.The references to the actual conditions of welfare in Japan help tounderstand of the harsh realities of the people who are in sociallydisadvantageous positions under ill influences of Bildungsphilister.The reinterpretation of Bildungsphilister turns around the concept ofdiversity, for Nietzsche has defined the concept of culture in the context ofdiversity. The reinterpretation makes check to the lack of logic and ethicsin the behavior patterns of Bildungsphilister, and gives close inspection toill influence of Bildungsphilister over society, for the degradation toBildungsphilister means the loss of the comprehension of diversity and thesense of mission for diversity, namely the loss of logic and ethics exactly.And the reinterpretation considers a direction in which Bildungsphilisterrecovers his essentially occupational character, and examines the means tourge the recovery of Bildungsphilister.
