SLA (Second Language Acquisition) is one of the most highly discussedsubjects, but in Japan the majority of research and reporting is concentrated inEnglish-language education, while research and reporting about other languagessuch as Italian are lacking. Obviously, the teaching of other languageshas many common points with English-language education, and we can borrowmany useful methods from it. However, each language has its own peculiaritieswhich must be taken into consideration when teaching. In addition, the‘distance’ between the students’ first language and their second languagesseriously affects their study of the latter. In order to identify such peculiarities and the ‘distance’ between Italian andJapanese, I carried out interviews with Italian-language teachers working forlanguage schools in Italy. All of them have experience with Japanese studentsand are aware of the differences between them and other nationalities in theclass. Through these interviews, it became clear that, compared with bothWesterners and other Asians such as Chinese and Koreans, Japanese studentshave much less difficulty with Italian pronunciation, and are more earnest instudying Italian grammar. On the other hand, they are more likely than othersto make syntactic errors and to suffer from insufficient vocabulary, which oftenhinders them both in comprehension and in expression. However, probablythe greatest obstacle for Japanese students is a lack of communicativeness, aresult of their cultural background and the linguistic peculiarities of their firstlanguage. It goes without saying that language teachers must be conscious of such advantagesand disadvantages on the part of the students. In Italian-languageeducation, there is a need for us to formulate more effective methods designedspecifically for Japanese students.
