Teaching Science to Develop Abilities to Think, to Make Decisions, and to Express in a Non-degree Course for Graduates in High School : A Report on Introducing Active Learning Approach

In this study, we introduced group activities in a science class in a non-degree course for graduates in high school for the purpose of ascertaining the effectiveness of active learning approach in developing students' abilities to thinking, to make decisions, and to express. At the end of the class, we had each student fill in a self-review sheet to reflect on their learning experience, and later we conducted a survey asking each student for responses to the class activities. The survey results indicated that more students were capable of connecting the class activities with their previous knowledge, were more willing to listen to other students, and were better able to communicate their ideas and opinions as a result of the active learning experience. From the analysis of the self-review sheets, we found a correlation between the introduction of group activities and the ability for expression in students. Those results indicate the possibility that active learning approaches are effective in developing students' abilities to thinking, to make decisions, and to express.
