Social participation support for adolescents and young adults with autism spectrum disorder: Conditions to promote participation in social activities on their own initiatives

This study was intended to examine conditions of social activities that adolescents and young adults with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder (HFASD) can participate on their own initiatives. We asked 6 young adults with HFASD reasons to participate some social activities in the past. They had decided whether to participate in the activities or not, depending on whether they were pleasant to be active with others than alone, other members and staff of them seemed to be kind, and contents of them were interesting. We considered that motivations to be active with others, interesting contents, appropriate cuesto participate easily, low frequency and no expectation to have close human relations were conditions of participation in social activities on their own initiatives. In addition, to support their participation in social activities, it is necessary to recommend them to make sure whether the activity meets the conditions.
