Through the study of Chinese civilization, Kakuzo Okakura "empirically" disjoined the relationship between the two civilizations, the Japanese inheritance from China culture. His work invented a unique Japanese personality different from that of China, and a "brilliant" Japanese civilization through innovating the Western culture. Thus, for Okakura, China merely exists as a means: while the traditional Chinese culture was seen in a positive light as the cornerstone of Japanese history, enabling it to be comparable to the West, the modern Chinese culture was disregarded in order to establish the Japanese leadership in the modern Asia.
