The artworks of Japanese painter Ike Taiga (1723-1776) are distinguished bysurprising artistic diversity. Moreover, each painting, introduced in this article, includes original features, but at the same time a certain combination of inner peculiarities unifies them into an overall artistic system. The image of “Five Hundred Arhats” shows an exquisite balance of intimacy and grandeur. In the painting technique of the “Morning-Glory Flower” the dynamism is expressed by the rhythm of delicate and bold touch. The “Clear Evening Bamboo” folding screen includes real and symbolic interpretation of the plant that helps to create meditative and synthetic image. “True View of Mt. Asama” with its complicated blended composition is the representation of Taiga’s attitude towards mountains and his feeling of nature. Lastly, in the “Orchid and Stone” scroll, poetry, calligraphy and drawing are unified by the same artistic thought, suggesting us to reflect on the concepts of refinement and virtue. Furthermore, the world of Taiga’s paintings can be divided into the external part, represented by certain techniques and visual solutions, and the internal part, where Taiga’s individual thought is visualized by a specific iconographic interpretation, allowing us to see the painter’s sense of values. However, the boundary between the two aspects is ambiguous, unstable and extremely delicate. This feature comes from Ike Taiga’s open-minded personality.
