Aoki Masaru is one of the earliest scholars who study on Chinese traditional literature in the modern time of Japan. This paper is focused on Aoki Masaru and his Etymological Studies. In his later years, Aoki mainly engaged in the Etymological study. He wrote three works -Tyūkameibutsukō (中華名物考), Kakokuhūmi (華国風味), Pekinhūzokuzuhu (北京風俗図譜) about Etymological research. The reason why Aoki engaged in Etymological research is in order to deepen the understanding of China classical literature. As for Aoki's the idea on Etymological research, it was more influenced by the modern Western Positivism than influenced by the textual research of the Qing Dynasty more stronger.
