Anecdotal evidence suggests that extra-curricular English language programs have grown substantially in number over the last decade in Japanese higher education as a way to enrich and improve tertiary EFL learning. This paper reports on one recent attempt to introduce an extra-curricular program at Ryukoku University's Fukakusa Campus in which Japanese students and native and non-native English-speaking international students participated in regular collaborative interaction in order to develop their foreign language skills between 2010-2012. In addition to a description of the program, student participants' (N=47) learner autonomy, motivation regarding foreign language learning, and enhancement of intercultural understanding are examined through an analysis of questionnaire data. A facilitating feature of the project was identified in the incorporation of student participant volunteers for program planning and management, which ensured a student-centered focus and enhanced participant motivation. Finally, suggested modifications and additional issues related to program improvement are presented.
