The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the Modality systems of Japanese and to classify the subdomains of Modulation and Modalization, using the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). In the following discussions, Modalization is subclassified into ability, usuality and probability. Modulation has five subdomains: necessity, obligation, permission, expectation and inclination. These frameworks are based on Teruya (2007), while those of the English Modality systems follow Halliday and Matthiessen (2014)'s definition of Modalization as usuality and probability, and Modulation as obligation and inclination. It will be testified as a hypothesis that the syntactic realizations of Modality expressions are various across individual languages, but the meanings such as obligation, inclination, usuality and probability are universal.
