Description
This paper examines the circumstances and potential of loanwords in English classrooms in Japan. Through the lens of an appropriate cognate definition, we see the remarkably large and useful resource that LWs provide. While there are limitations, these differ from those commonly presumed. Such misconceptions have led to an entrenched bias towards LWs in both society and the classroom. Cognates function regardless, and their efficacy can be enhanced through appropriate pedagogy.
