Description
This survey article describes the history of the British whaling industry, as reflected in folk songs. It goes from the 17th through to the 20th centuries, giving examples of songs mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries. It describes the hardship and cruelty of the industry, as well as the money to be made from it. The article describes the singing of such songs in modern times, and the reasons why they are rarely sung in this century.
