This paper argues that there is a fair amount of ancient Chinese loanwords in Japanese, borrowed presumably during the Yayoi (ca. BC 500~AD 250) period and this has some implications for Japanese genealogy. Remains of these ancient loanwords can be detected in so-called kun'yomi (Japanese reading) words, which are generally thought to be of Japanese origin. In order to search for true genealogy of Japanese, we must sift through Japanese words and eliminate those Chinese loanwords as much as possible.
