Various secondary batteries including Electric Double Layer Capacitors (EDLCs) are widely used in various electrical equipments, etc. Among them, EDLCs offer high energy density and long life span, so various applications may be anticipated in the realm of those energy storage devices. However, since the voltage limit of the device is low, it is necessary to connect them in series or parallel. In addition, it is required that they be used in the region of their critical voltage limit or capacity limit. In order to apply them efficiently, the devices should be used with balanced voltage. In this paper, some novel voltage balancers are presented, employing a Cockcroft-Walton circuit (CW circuit) as a basic construction. Characteristics of proposed circuits are analyzed and improved especially about circuit construction strategies.
