Objective:Approach to improve maternal health in developing countries is a global issue. The purpose of this study was to review the current situation of maternal health in Indonesia and examine the government strategy to improve maternal health in Indonesia using a review of the statistical data and previous research. Methods:A literature search was conducted using electronic databases and we collected and reviewed papers on maternal health in Indonesia that were published after 2005. Results:Maternal mortality rate in Indonesia has been reduced, but the Millennium Development Goal 5 has not yet been achieved and the rate is still the highest among the original members of ASEAN. The Indonesian government has conducted a community based program to reduce maternal mortality, but it remains unclear whether this current program has been effective in improving maternal health in Indonesia. Conclusion:In order to improve maternal and child health in Indonesia, it is necessary to have a more comprehensive approach that will empower not only pregnant women and their family members and community but also the providers.
