After the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, the harsh nature of Japanʼs natural environment and theimportance of crisis management systems gained greater recognition. In this paper, I would like to discussdisaster risk reduction from the viewpoint of education for sustainable development.First of all, our current education on the Japanese environment and education on the development ofdisaster protection measures should be revised in accordance with international trends. From now on, weshould use the natural environment to predict the natural disasters that will occur in japan. Additionally, attention should be paid to the importance of cooperation with schools, homes, and the community. Theattitude of teachers is important with regard to education on diaster risk reduction in school.National and international systems for crisis management should be established for purposes that includethe prevention and mitigation of natural disasters. At the same time, viewed from the level of the individual, disaster countermeasures are strongly connected in the literal sense to the current educational trend of “zestfor living” (life skills education). Still, as can be seen from cases of natural disaster, it is no easy matter torecognize the problems occurring in areas other than our own and to have the intention of resolving them.Today, as numerous natural disasters occur around the world and efforts to prevent and mitigate them in the futurehave become an urgent problem, along with an awareness of the two-sidedness of nature, it may be time to reconsiderthe ideas of harmony with nature and harmony in human activities. In other words, we have the opportunity today toreaffirm our reverence for nature as well as to reflect on what kind of human society we are creating.
