The English skills required by Japanese companies follow their HR strategies, which are in turn based on their corporate business strategies. In 2000, many Japanese companies employed the TOEIC® test to measure their employees’ English language proficiency; however, in 2011, they were starting to focus more on English for specific purposes – English for their business purposes, such as negotiations and top management socialization. Hitachi’s Corporate HR Division and the Hitachi Institute of Management Development offer various educational programs to produce high-performing leaders that can lead Hitachi’s global business to stay ahead of the competition. This paper examines the validity of some major global programs in terms of communication, business skills, and diversity and proposes a model to link university and in-company education in Japan.
