Description
Emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate was carried out at 50°C using poly(methyl methacrylate-co-methacrylic acid) as emulsifier and potassium persulfate as initiator. It was found that the number of polymer particles formed is proportional to the 0.43 power of the initial emulsifier concentration, proportional to the 0.57 power of the initial initiator  concentration, and independent of the initial monomer concentration, respectively. The rate of polymerization was proportional to the 0.27 power of the initial emulsifier concentration, proportional to the 0.47 power of the initial initiator concentration, and independent of the initial monomer concentration,respectively. These relationships are very different from those observed in MMA emulsion polymerization using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) emulsifier.
