The present study examined the effects of instruction requiring L2 learners to express ideas and opinions on the development of their writings. Ten Japanese university students worked on the Agree/Disagree Tasks, in which they shared ideas and opinions on several controversial topics with each other and wrote opinion paragraphs within ten minutes. Their written production was analyzed with quantitative measures of complexity, accuracy, and fluency. The results revealed that the AD Tasks have positive effects on the development of the learners’ writing abilities and that the instruction which requires L2 learners to express ideas and opinions could effectively promote L2 learning.
