Description
Most students of the junior high school with which I am involved make serious efforts to understand what they have been told or suggested. However, they are not very good at developing their own thought through exchanging opinions with others. They will nevertheless soon be permitted to vote at younger ages than ever before in Japan. With a hope that these students will graduate from school with the sense that "we ourselves create our society," I developed a class entitled the subject of this paper. The class aims were not only to acquire knowledge on contemporary society, but also to realize that "we are the participants in sovereignty who create our society." Thus, to test the hypothesis that "a future-oriented social studies class raises concerns over the issue of responsibility as a participant in sovereignty in the field of civics education," a class of a project-based learning that includes discussions on the future was undertaken, using course materials on topics from the current status of West Asia. The results of this study show that students gradually acquire capabilities of decision-making, discovering their way of life, and involving the society. These capabilities raise concerns about the protection of human rights, humanity, and the responsibilities of participants in sovereignty.
