PITTING CORROSION OF TYPE 430 STAINLESS STEEL UNDER CHLORIDE SOLUTION FILMS

In recent years, ferritic stainless steel is promoting to use than other stainless steels such as austenitic, duplex stainless steels owning to affordable cost. Unfortunately, this material has moderate corrosion resistance. Therefore, both understanding corrosion process and improving corrosion resistance of this material will be important issues. In this study, the corrosion behavior of type 430 stainless steel under solution layers containing chloride is investigated. Effects of the thin-film parameters such as diameter, thickness in probability of occurrence of pitting corrosion are elucidated. Besides, a new method to monitor the corrosion phenomenon under changing of relative humidity is introduced. Finally, a potentiodynamic polarization method is employed under concentrated sodium nitrate solutions to improve the corrosion resistance of this material.
